3rd Grade Art: Transformed Places Inspired by Abelardo Morell

In the next few weeks, 3rd graders will be starting an exciting new project inspired by the photographs of Cuban American artist Abelardo Morell. Morell, whose work is currently on display at the High, turns entire rooms into cameras obscura, then photographs them. The resulting photographs (which show a flipped image of the view from outside the rooms' windows) are surreal and imaginative depictions of everyday places.

Stay tuned to see how the 3rd grade artists re-imagine and transform places that they see every day!

Updates on Projects

It has been great (if not strange) to be back at school for the first full week in awhile! We are making incredible progress on each of our projects - check out the pictures below!

After spending a few class periods making/designing paper, Kindergarteners were ready to start on their collages about a special place.

1st graders continued working on their mixed-media assemblages, and a few classes wrote written reflections in their sketchbooks about the process.

Many 2nd graders were ready to take their autobiographical comics from sketches to final drawings, and 3rd graders began a project involving silhouettes and watercolor for the art program's Square 1 art fundraiser.

Pictures coming soon!

New Year, New Projects!

This has been an exciting few weeks at GLOBE, and your artists have been working on some awesome projects to get the semester started!

Kindergarteners have been learning about Romare Bearden, whose collages were influenced by his childhood in the South and his experiences during the Harlem Renaissance. We watched a video about him and read a book called Uptown, which describes Harlem as seen through a young boy's eyes. Right now, the students are working on creating their own patterned paper that they will later use to make a collage that depicts a place that is important to them.

In 1st grade, students are creating assemblages inspired by the art of renowned sculptor Louise Nevelson and contemporary artist Radcliffe Bailey, who lives and works in Atlanta. We watched videos highlighting these two artists, and the students compared and contrasted the styles and subject matter found in their art. Students are now working on their mixed-media assemblages, which will incorporate a variety of materials, including found objects!

2nd grade artists have been working on plans for their autobiographical comic strips inspired by the graphic novels March and Smile. The students have been planning out their stories in their sketchbooks, and will start on their final pieces in the coming weeks!

Students learning about comic sequencing in groups

Since the 3rd grade unit on guerrilla art went so well, we are going to continue investigating public art, as well as art that explores a sense of place. The first project has been an open-ended assignment that revolves around the theme of "place." This gives students a great deal of freedom in choosing their materials, techniques, and subject matter, while ensuring that their artworks will be somewhat related. The artists are exploring this theme in a variety of ways, from imagining and creating their own places, to actually building 3-dimensional spaces!

More updates to come!
