Last week, kindergartners experimented with creating lines using oil pastel, then painted over their lines with watercolors for a colorful surprise! This week, we discussed the difference between geometric and organic shapes, and the students used various found objects to create a variety of shapes.
In 1st grade, we have been viewing and discussing images of the Mi Casa, Your Casa exhibit at the High Museum. We talked about the traditional symbol of a house used in the installation, and now the students are creating their own unique symbols for "home."
Next week, we will work on making prints of these symbols - I can't wait to see how they turn out!
2nd graders have been exploring different ways of creating self-portraits. We started off by discussing the four self-portraits below, created by Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, and Chuck Close. We discussed the similarities and differences between them, coming to the conclusion that everyone creates self-portraits using different methods and materials, and that some aren't even realistic! The students have been experimenting with drawing their facial features in their sketchbooks, and next week they will begin their final self-portraits.
Meanwhile, 3rd grade has been discovering how to draw animals. They got the chance to use lots of materials in our art library, including photographs, books, and 3-D animal models. After working independently, they set goals for what they wanted to learn. Working together, we figured out how to find the correct proportions and angles, create texture, and break animal bodies into shapes! Next week, we will look at Oaxacan folk art animals, which are well-known for their vibrant colors and intricate patterns.
4th graders began planning class murals after viewing and discussing photos of murals from Chicano Park in San Diego. They talked about the images, symbolism, and themes they saw before brainstorming a list of potential themes to focus on in their class. A few classes decided on their theme, while a few others will finish their discussions next week so we can start coming up with imagery to best illustrate our chosen themes.
